Trial of guided pilgrimages between Whalley Abbey and Blackburn Cathedral
It is planned that in the near future, guided pilgrimages with overnight accommodation will be offered at Whalley Abbey. As a proof of concept, a small group walked the way to Blackburn Cathedral on a June Friday enjoying perfect weather along the shaded paths and open fields. This time Jonathan Carmyllie, the vicar of Whalley who knows the way as the back of his hand, led the way and Carolyn Johnson, an expert rambling guide and pilgrimage enthusiast, came in tow so that she can guide groups of pilgrims in the future.
The route between the Cathedral and the Abbey was established five years ago. The route is varied and it explores the countryside as well as industrial Blackburn, and it takes in some decent hills as well as flat, paved roads along the canal. The hill-climbs are rewarded with panoramic views towards Pendle Hill and the Rossendale Fells. There is a wonderful sense of becoming part of the scenery when you are travelling on foot and a pilgrimage accords the opportunity to think of your own story as part of the big story. It is not only a physical but also an inner journey to make meaning of your life.
