Story-Telling Retreat about St. Paulinus, Apostle of the North
“The Swift Flight of the Sparrow”
In this retreat we will tell the stories of eight key moments of St Paulinus’ life, echoing across the centuries, telling the thrilling tale of a bold missionary who evangelised northern England in the seventh century. Using the Bible and worship to help us reflect, we’ll look at how these stories of faith and mission, battles and kings, still speak to us today.
You can explore the exciting development Anglo-Saxon Northumbria here.
The retreat links with the Faith in the North programme promoted by the Archbishop of York, which looks to encourage a movement of prayer, storytelling and church planting inspired by the Northern Saints. The focus for 2026 is pilgrimage, and Whalley Abbey is very excited about becoming the end point for the St Paulinus pilgrimage. This is why we want to tell the story of St Paulinus.
The Rev’d Alistair Littlewood is a priest in the diocese of Southwell & Nottingham, and has been telling stories all his life. In 2018 he became a professional storyteller, and has worked in schools, stately homes, churches, U3A groups and holiday camps.
