Icons and Prayer - Quiet Day
Though most readily associated with the Orthodox Christian tradition, where they form an integral part of spirituality and liturgical worship, icons can also be found gracing the walls of many an Anglican church, chapel or private home.
Often described as ‘windows into heaven’, these classical and stylised images of Jesus, Mary and other saints have been an aid to prayer for many generations of Christians across the universal Church.
Sister Sue OCMM is a member of the Order of the Companions of Martha and Mary, an Anglican religious community with roots in Lancashire and the North West of England. The sisters’ vocation is a way of Christian discipleship which seeks to balance the activity of Martha with the contemplation of Mary, through a life of prayer, contemplation and active service under a common rule of life.
Participants are informed that the day will involve periods of silence. It may be beneficial to bring a sketch book, Bible and any other resources which may enhance your experience of the day. Similarly, it is advisable to bring outdoor-appropriate shoes and clothing in order to make use of the beautiful grounds.
